The Tampa Yankees are a minor league baseball team based in Tampa, Florida.
The team, which plays in the Florida State League, is the High-A affiliate of the New York Yankees major league club. Home games are played at George M. Steinbrenner Field, a miniature replica of the Yankees' home stadium (Yankee Stadium) in the Bronx. The T-Yankees are the current defending champions of the FSL, having defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the championship series three games to two.
George Steinbrenner Field
Legends Field opened in 1996 and seats 10,386 fans. The field sits adjacent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' football facility, Raymond James Stadium.
George Steinbrenner Field is located on One Steinbrenner Road. Steinbrenner Field used to be named Legend’s Fields, but the name was changed during 2008 spring training for the New York Yankees. It happened on opening day on spring training and a huge ceremony was held in honor of the “Boss.” George Steinbrenner field also plays host to monument Park, which includes monuments dedicated to the greatest Yankees of all time. These great players are represented by their playing number and an example is for number 15, which represents Thurman Munson.
The current manager of the Tampa Yankees is Torre Tyson. Luis Sojo, the previous manager, is a very well known for his play in the playoffs in the late 90’s.
The Tampa Yankees are part of the Florida State League, which is broken up into two divisions. The East division and the West division. They finished the season in second place in the Florida State League West division. They ended the season 12.5 games behind the Dunedin Blue Jays, and failed to reach the postseason.
Notable major league players to once play for the Tampa Yankees are Derek Jeter, Ruben Rivera, Mariano Rivera, Ramiro Mendoza, Tim Raines, Eric Milton, and Sojo.
